Nokia gets ready to launch its latest smartphone in the UK.

In recent years Nokia has been slightly eclipsed by Apple's iPhone and the Blackberry handsets produced by RIM. There was a time when Nokia was the talk of the moment and the distinctive ‘Nokia Theme’ ring tone could be heard in shops and restaurants and on public transport. The phone manufacturer that had the world playing Snake on its handsets and using its familiar interface on its phones is now aiming to set tongues wagging again with its latest smart phone offering, the Lumia 800.

Advertising its New Toy

Nokia has been quick to advertise the Lumia 800 on television and its campaign has been a heavy one on the commercial channels. Nokia seem confident that there will be great demand for their phone and mobile phone shops are already taking pre-orders before the release of the Lumia on November 16th 2011.

The Lumia 800 comes with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating software built in and on first glance, the phone seems packed with features but will they be enough to make people but down their iPhones and Blackberrys?

Specifications

The Lumia 800 weighs in at 142g and carries a 3.7” curved glass screen. The Lumia is touch screen and as with previous models such as the popular N95 comes equipped with a camera featuring Carl Zeiss optics. For those who like taking photographs with their phones, the Lumia 800 boasts an 8 mega pixel camera and even offers HD video.

The windows operating system brings with the Bing search engine and Internet Explorer 9. The phone comes with the standard SMS, MMS and IM built in. Those users wanting to find a smart phone to help with working on the go will be pleased to read that the phone also allows for the use of Microsoft Windows, Excel and Powerpoint amongst others but then again, with a Windows operating system there is expectancy for these to be included. With a screen height of 800 pixels and a width of 480 pixels, there’s really not much chance of those using tablet computers replacing them with this little device.

The Lumia 800 comes with WiFi (is there a smartphone which doesn’t?) which also means that there is WiFi positioning along with GPS positioning again, all pretty standard features on smartphones and finding your way around won’t be a problem with navigation also built in – although there are likely to be the usual charges associated with navigation.

Entertainment on the phone comes in the form of music and video capabilities including FM radio, music streaming and audio player which supports just about every kind of digital music file out there including of course, the MP3.

The Nokia Lumia 800 certainly comes packed with features but then again so does the Apple iPhone, the Blackberry, HTC and Samsung Galaxy. There doesn’t seem to be anything too leftfield or too mind blowing on the new Nokia but its nice to see Nokia back in the game.
